When we open our doors later in the summer, The Net, together with partners Sustrans will be working together to encourage visitors to the Fish Quay to turn to pedal power to get out and about.

A ride to the Fish Quay could see you burn up to 500 calories an hour, and what better way to refuel for the marathon trek home than with some fresh locally produced food from The Net’s cafe, over looking one of the best views in the world.


Every picture tells a story and non more so than the elation on the face of this happy chap who was one of the group of cyclists who rode from Whitehaven to Tynemouth in under 12 hours in aid of St Oswald’s Hospice, raising around a staggering £6000.00.

The group, led by fundraiser John Davidson, left Whitehaven at 3.30 am 22nd June and were the first group to stop for a photo opportunity outside the Old Low Light which is now on the newly re-routed Coast 2 Coast Cycle Ways.

When we open in September, we will be geared up to welcome cyclists in need of refreshments before the final climb on the last leg of their marathon Coast 2 Coast adventure.

We are currently installing 2 new sets of cycle racks to encourage our visitors to use pedal power to come and work up a thirst and appetite before looking around our exhibitions, or taking part in one of our hands-on workshops.

This weekend sees the return of the North of England Civic Trust’s annual Heritage Skills Weekend at Tynemouth Station between 10.00am – 4.00pm

Combine a visit to Tynemouth’s weekend market with a visit to Festival. Apart from the great range of tremendously skilled craftspeople in action, you can come and say hello to our great team of volunteers who will be tying you up in knots with their marine inspired hands-on demonstrations. There will be loads for the smaller fry to do to, and Sunday there is a chance to meet our very own Pirate Silk and his gang.

We will also be on the lookout to recruit a team of volunteers in a variety of roles to work with us to help make The Net a space where everyone can learn to value their environment, past present and future, and have great fun doing it.
